A little bit of History
I started flying Slope gliders on the South Downs near Brighton
in the early 90s. Dad and I would disappear for most of the afternoon
almost every weekend unless the weather was really bad - and sometimes
when it was really bad! In the later years when the wind didn't
blow we flew power. I believe this early start in gliding greatly
improved my flying skills. The secret of gliding is to be smooth
and accurate - something I believe should be present in all types
of flying.
In my late teens I discovered everything late teens should discover
and drifted away from flying. Soon enough the bug bit me again and
I was back. Slope combat had been discovered which was great fun
if a little controversial! I also did a few years of F3F (slope
racing) and slope pylon. Also spent a lot of time going round in
circles doing Dynamic Soaring. I had a job and finally had the money
to buy a helicopter, something I had (like most kids) dreamed of
buying.
Soon, the heli bug had bitten me hard; I was flying helis more
than anything else and found people coming to me for help and advice.
I spent some time working in the local model shop, then with the
help of another guy I started a flying school.
Now, I run it on my own and it's great fun, and very rewarding
helping people further their skills.
I am heavily involved in the running of Dorset Model Helicopter
Club. Although we are a Helicopter Club, friendly plane fliers are
allowed too - we are not your average club.
These days I am happy as long as I am flying something, Now i have
helis to a point where I don't need to be flying 3 gallons a week
to be improving i have been able to open my flying back up to slope
flying and fixed wing power flying as well. I still compete in F3F
to keep my hand in, Also planning on doing some F3J and fixed wing
3d for a bit of a challenge. Aeromodelling is such a diverse sport,
as long as its not raining there is always something to do!
